  • Currently, there are no proven effective treatments for this disease.
  • A lot of research are currently in progress to find antiviral treatment for COVID-19.
  • Viral infections in the respiratory system make patients prone to co-infections leading to a more severe disease outcome and death.
  • A number of antibiotics are used to prevent and treat bacterial co-infections and secondary bacterial infections in patients with respiratory viral infections such as COVID-19.
  • Antibiotics do not affect COVID-19 virus, but respiratory viral infections can cause bacterial pneumonia.
  • There is a possibility that patients die from bacterial infections rather than from viral infections.
  • Currently, there are a number of bacteria that are antibiotic-resistant, and the overuse of antibiotics can render other antibiotics less effective.
  • Bacterial co-infections and secondary bacterial infections are considered critical risk factors for the death rate of COVID-19.
  • Overuse of antibiotics should also be considered.
