Black Eagle Dam is a hydroelectric dam located on the Missouri River in Great Falls, Montana. The dam used to be a timber-and-rock crib dam in the 1890. It was the first hydroelectric dam built in Montana and on the Missouri River. Great Falls was nicknamed “The Electric City” due to the construction of the dam. In 1926, a second dam was constructed to replace the first dam which was left submerged in the reservoir. The second dam is about 238 meters long and 10.5 meters high, and its powerhouse has three turbines capable of generating seven megawatts of power each.

Black Eagle Falls is the first in a series of five waterfalls which constitute the Great Falls of the Missouri River in the state of Montana. Before being dammed, water dropped about 8 meters over the falls. The falls formed on a fall line unconformity in the Great Falls Tectonic Zone. The Missouri River in this area flows over and through the Kootenai Formation, a mostly non-marine sandstone laid down by rivers, glaciers, and lakes in the past. Some of the Kootenai Formation is marine, however, laid down by shallow seas. The river is eating away at the softer non-marine sandstone, with the harder rock forming the falls themselves.
